The Initial brief

Our client wanted the ultimate team building experience and was inspired by the TV show “Race Across The World” Race Across The World.

Upon initial conversation with our client, it was clear they had the bones of a fantastic event concept. They just needed our help to stitch it together and the technology to make it happen.

A detailed brief was received and it was time to get creative… an interactive race across the UK in 36 hours from Reading to Edinburgh!

The participants however, were not told how to get from A to B and left to their own devices. They needed to utilise the most sustainable transport along the route, spend the least amount of money and get to the end destination on time.

a race across the uk

Guests met at the Pentahotel in Reading and were informed on what the next 36 hours looked like. Equipt with a backpack of supplies, cash and the ClueGo app, it was full steam ahead on the race to Edinburgh.

Along the route were checkpoints at major cities across the UK with a Pentahotel to visit. This encouraged the teams to get the wider staff involved and create a company wide involvement.

There were even members of the company hidden within these cities to find and gain bonus points to gain an advance on the leaderboard!

Although, visiting some of these checkpoints could have taken teams off the most direct route, it gave them the opportunity to progress within the race and earn more points. This encouraged further team work on route planning and decision making, whilst also being budget conscious and sustainable.

The challenges within the app were custom to our client, based on their core values, objectives and focus areas of the business.

However they didn’t want to take away the fun element that a ClueGo event provides, so this custom content was included in an interactive way to increase engagement.

making it inclusive

As our client has hotels and staff across Europe and the UK, they wanted the event to be accessible to all, so we needed a solution to this additional element of the brief.

Fortunately our app has the ability to activate challenges via GPS, QR codes or by simply tapping challenges on an interactive map. This gave us the ability to connect the teams remotely with a cunning plan!

The UK players on the ground had to collect virtual hotel room keys from successfully completing GPS challenges.

These virtual keys were sent via our app to their French, German, Czechia or Belgium counterparts to unlock challenges on their devices by tapping hotel icons spread throughout their map.

Without these virtual keys the European teams could not progress in the game and assist the UK teams with additional points as they were working in an alliance.

Thus creating an alliance between teams to work on a wider overall goal. Teams were awarded for individual merit as well as working alongside their European companion.

Conclusion

Upon arriving at the final destination in Edinburgh, teams were asked to present their strategies, how they decided which route to take, what modes of transport they took and why. Also to showcase how sustainable they had been and how they saved money.

Our event manager then presented a belly laughing slideshow of the teams photos and video challenges taken throughout their mad 36 hours! The results and prizes were given to the top teams before a well deserved glass of bubbly to celebrate a fantastic experience.
