The clients Brief

ClueGo was approached by a high-net-worth client to design a flawless, non-timed classic sports car rally through France for his 70th birthday.

Using gamification, bespoke branding, and meticulous physical reconnaissance, the our event team delivered a seamless, highly engaging two-day experience across the French countryside during a national bank holiday.

The client requested 5 hours of drive time per day, split either side of a nice lunch.

  • Client: High-Net-Worth Individual / Classic Car Collector

  • Event Type: Milestone Birthday Private Invitation Rally & Gala

  • Location: Versailles, the French Countryside, and the Loire Valley (Le Mans & Tours)

  • Duration: 2 Days (plus setup)

  • Attendees: Family & Friends (Multi-generational pairs)

The Challenge

The client wanted his inner circle to experience driving his personal collection of rare, vintage sports cars from Paris to a luxury chateau near Le Mans. The brief came with a unique set of constraints:

  • No Timed Elements: The event needed to feel like a leisurely, luxurious drive, not a race.

  • The Element of Surprise: The client did not want guests knowing the final destination or the route in advance.

  • Varying Guest Engagement: There was a risk that some couples might participate less enthusiastically than others.

  • Logistical Hurdles: The event took place over a French bank holiday, meaning most petrol stations, services, and restaurants were closed to the public.

  • Extreme Weather: Temperatures soared to 34°C (93°F), threatening both vintage car engines and event hardware.

The Strategy and Solution

Custom Branding & Instant Rapport

Leveraging a warm introduction from the client’s brother (a previous client), our events team established instant rapport. We built a bespoke event crest incorporating elements of the client’s life, his love for antique cars, a grand chateau, and French vineyards, establishing a premium, exclusive theme from day one.

Tech Customisation: The “Blind” Route

To keep guests intrigued, we utilised our app to create multiple legs throughout the day. Each leg had up to 20 checkpoints. Some of these checkpoints triggered a bonus challenge, allowing the team to score vital points.

  • Guests could see their immediate distance to the next landmark via the map, but the rest of the route was hidden.

  • Reaching the final checkpoint of Leg 1 automatically unlocked Leg 2. This maintained complete mystery and excitement.

Driving the Route (Meticulous Reconnaissance)

During the recce phase, Jim realised the app’s standard software re-centered and zoomed out after every passed checkpoint—perfect for walking tours, but a safety hazard when driving a classic car at speed.

We instructed developers to modify the app’s core code so the map remained statically zoomed, ensuring effortless, distraction-free navigation for the drivers.

Route Approval

Over four full days, Jim (our event director) physically drove the entire route alongside the client. They mapped out scenic, safe, non-motorway driving roads—including the famous, winding 17 Turns outside Paris. They also vetted all restaurants and negotiated a private opening with a premium venue on a day France was entirely shut down for a bank holiday.

Event Execution & Adaptability

The Saturday Prep: Forging Alliances

Upon landing in France via Birmingham, the ClueGo team made critical, last-minute adjustments to the roster. To mitigate unequal guest participation, they deployed the app’s Alliance Feature.

By grouping three couples into a single “Alliance,” individual scores contributed to a team total. This fostered healthy peer encouragement, making sure every single car felt motivated to complete the challenges.

Sunday Launch: Versailles to Grand Lucé

The event kicked off at 10:00 AM inside the spectacular, exclusive grounds of the Palace of Versailles.

  • Logistical Precision: A team of three (including enthusiastic hotel staff) shuttled the vintage fleet to the starting line while Jim ( our event director)  conducted an interactive briefing for the guests.

  • Event Management: Once the teams left the Palace, Craig headed straight to the lunch venue. With an armful of spare iPads, Craig greeted the guests on arrival and captured a few snaps.

  • During this time Jim stayed at the Palace to control the tech side of the event. As soon as the cars arrived at lunch, Jim made a bolt for Château du Grand-Lucé near Le Mans—ensuring a staff member was always on-site to receive the guests. On his arrival, Jim regained control of the tech allowing Craig to finish his journey to the Chateau.

Overcoming the Elements

With temperatures hitting 34°C, our iPads became a priority. One team accidentally left an iPad on a hot windshield before the start, causing a thermal blackout. The team quickly resolved the issue, kept a backup fleet of charged iPads on hand, and utilised the vintage cars’ cigarette lighters to maintain battery life.

Content Capture

Craig also doubled as a casual event photographer/videographer. Our client did not want to spoil the relaxed event atmosphere with a more demanding photographer so this worked perfectly.

The Overnight Route Overhaul & Day 2 Success

Recognisng that the intense heat and concentration required to drive vintage cars had fatigued the guests on Day 1, the client requested that the Day 2 driving time be significantly reduced.

The 9:00 PM Pivot

What originally took several weeks to build had to be entirely re-engineered in a few hours. Sitting in the Chateau at 9:00 PM on Sunday night, Jim completely redesigned the Day 2 route.

  • Drawing on his deep mental map from the physical reconnaissance trip, he truncated the loop down toward Tours.

  • Crucially, he preserved the final 50 miles of the original route—widely considered the most beautiful stretch of the entire journey—ensuring the guests still experienced stunning chateaus, panoramic vistas, and prime driving roads.

Day 2 Execution

The shortened route was a resounding triumph. Guests enjoyed an hour exploring a beautiful local town, toured a stunning lunchtime chateau, had a relaxed meal, and completed a smooth, 2-hour return journey.

Upon arrival back at Château du Grand-Lucé, the classic sports cars were reverse-parked in the courtyard, creating a breathtaking, picturesque display.

Despite extreme 34°C heat and the last-minute overnight route overhaul, the team executed a flawless trip, culminating in a luxury themed gala and an incredibly satisfied client.

Dangerous Liaisons evening party

The Grand Finale: A Dangerous Liaisons Gala

The event culminated in an opulent, full-scale fancy dress ball themed around Dangerous Liaisons.

  • The Atmosphere: Guests wore lavish period costumes, dining in one of the grand rooms of the chateau.

  • The Staff Touch: Setting themselves apart, the event team and the client’s PA dressed comically in French Revolutionary gear. Despite the intense heat, it injected a sense of fun and theatricality into the evening.

  • The Awards: Daily high scorers were celebrated before the team combined the metrics to announce the overall winners. Alongside individual group prizes, the client awarded a spectacular, custom-commissioned vase to the winning individual pair.

Results & Post-Event Innovation

  • 100% Route Success: Despite vintage mechanics and hidden checkpoints, every team successfully navigated the backroads of France without a single car getting lost.

  • Flawless Client Satisfaction: The client praised the team’s agility, round-the-clock dedication, and technical prowess.

  • Elite Operational Stamina: Executing an event of this scale required the team to work intense, 16-hour days, remaining constantly on duty to manage live logistics while maintaining an elite level of hospitality.
